What is Cuts for Cancer?
Cuts for Cancer is done in close collaboration with On The Fringe hair design.
Shaving your head is a great way to show support for those suffering from long-term medical hair loss, particularly due to cancer. It demonstrates your dedication to understanding and sharing the experience with cancer patients everywhere. Admittedly, shaving your head can be an extreme sacrifice and may not be something everyone is willing to commit to. Cuts for Cancer offers the opportunity to show your support while keeping some hair on your head. Professional hair cutting services are provided for those willing to cut and donate at least 8″ of healthy hair.
Where do our donations go?
Hair is donated to Eva & Co. Wigs to be turned into beautiful wigs for cancer patients.
Hair donations 8″ in length or longer are donated to Eva & Co. Wigs to be made into wigs for children who suffer long-term medical hair loss — most notably due to chemotherapy treatments or the autoimmune disease Alopecia areata, for which there is no known cause or cure. These prostheses help to restore self-esteem and confidence, enabling children to face the world and their peers while enjoying life and being themselves. About 15 ponytails are required to produce one wig, which has a market value of $3000 (USD) — which means that every ponytail we receive has a value of $200 (USD)!
What if I am unable to attend?
We accept hair donations year long through the mail or in person (at the UBC Vancouver campus). Remember to follow these guidelines in order for us to be able to make the best use of your hair:
- Hair should be washed
- Do not braid
- Hair should be a minimum of 8 inches in length
- Hair should not be chemically treated (bleached, coloured or permed), but highlights are accepted
- We accept grey hair
